On very cold (below 20⁰) or wet days, students will be invited into the building at 8:00am to the auditorium before the school day begins at 8:35. Students may enter through the playground doors or through our main floor doors.
All elementary students spend a portion of the lunch period outside. When weather prevents students from being outside, an announcement will be made over the PA system if it is to be an “Inside Day.” Students will go to the cafeteria on the same schedule to eat lunch. Instead of going outside before or after lunch, students will go to the auditorium to watch a video or read a book. We will make every effort to engage our kids in educational videos, though we may also show G rated programs from time-to-time.
Whenever possible, we will maintain an outside schedule. To help us achieve this, please be sure your student comes to school prepared to go outside in cold, wet and snowy weather. Please note: We will be outside in weather that is 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above. We will also go outside in light snow or rain provided that the playground is adequately clear for students to play. Please help your child be prepared every day. When our students are prepared, they can get the fresh air and exercise they need to help them learn in the afternoon.
Procedures for Other Weather

Delayed Start/School Closure
To learn if DPS is on a “Delayed Start,” closed due to severe weather, or will dismiss school during the day due to snow, watch local T.V. channels 2,4,7,9, 31, and 50 (Spanish) or listen to radio KOA 850 AM and KJME 1390 AM (Spanish). If DPS is on a delayed start, elementary buses may arrive ½ hour later than usual.
The decision to keep schools open or to close them during winter weather conditions is not a simple one, but it is made with one overriding factor in mind: The well-being of our students, their families and staff. It is a good idea to decide in advance how to best keep up with the changes, what childcare arrangements are needed, and how to adjust if school is closed due to inclement weather. Detailed DPS winter weather and snow day information including information on how families can find out if school is closed, can be found on the transportation website or on the DPS website.
